So after a thrilling season, we now bring the year to an end. The Chess game is tidied away, and the thinking caps are on for next season. After a strong but shakey start to the season, we were off to a good one with a magnificent first place. The rest we wont talk about, only joking, for the second and the rest of the competitions leading up to finals we had some very strong opposition with Liberty Drum Corps who kept pipping us to the post. The kids they tried harder and harder to close that gap, by the final competition we had closed a lot of those gaps. Equal first in brass, first place for our magnificent guard and only single points in the rest of the categories.
Finals looming the kids and staff went to work, the work rate was outstanding, they wanted this bad. Over and over we went with the show, piece by piece, breaking it down, building it up, music ripped apart and put together. I have never seen such young people working so hard.
The day of Finals arrived and the only thing we knew for certain was we had come 2nd in the overall league for the season. Time to perform. they put thier heart and sole (see what I did there) into every rollstep and backwards tiptoe, music was loud and quiet in the right places, the odd dodgy note, but who doesnt play one ? Performance complete, they couldnt have given any more, I hate them, they made my eyes leak. There were cuddles and tears gallore, they knew they had given thier all. It wasnt enough. Pipped again at the post. It must have been a magnificent performance by Liberty as in all categories they left us standing. I feel personally dissapointed, nearly as dissapointed as I was back in 1984 when we came runners up to Bristol Unicorns, I really felt for those kids.
Time now to kick it up a gear, time for the comeback kids. Phantom Knights will rise again next season, they will come back harder, stronger and bigger. Liberty you set the benchmark, next year we are going to burn it.
Thanks to the organisation that was put into Finals this year. It was truly a success, and the venue was top knotch. We look forward to competeing against all the other corps next season no matter what we do. Have a good break all and work hard, I know we will be 🙂
